They were the images that defined the conflict in Iraq: the pain of ordinary Iraqi civilians, the exhaustion of American soldiers. But what became of them? From Fort Polk, Louisiana, USA, to Tal Afar, northern Iraq, Guardian reporters track down the people behind the images and hear their moving stories (Faces of war: hear the stories behind iconic images of Iraq conflict)

In this audio slide show, Lawrence Weschler, whose piece “David Hockney’s iPhone Passion” appears in the Review‘s October 22, 2009 issue, discusses the new drawings that David Hockney has been making with the Brushes application on his iPhone. This is a series of slideshows about German nuns - its all in German so I have no idea what they are saying but this makes it interesting in terms of analysing the craft. Very good use of undercut nat sound and integration of audio.

Great detailed strongly crafted slideshows with an informational purpose but real lesson on how corny stock music ruins good work - VERY irritating.

La Rinconada: Peru’s city of dreams By: Michael Robinson Chavez
Amid the shifting glaciers of the Peruvian Andes, 17,200 feet up are the mines of La Rinconada. The surging price of gold has triggered a massive influx of Peruvians willing to work the deadly mines in search of their fortunes in gold.
Another long one. I don’t usually like narration focused slideshows but the script and delivery of this one is very good and it has good integration of nat sound and translated interviews. (Another POYI winner)

Anna, a young woman in Portland, Oregon, lives with her mother and her basketball shot clock. She and her mom reflect on her life and living with Asperger’s Syndrome.

Even though this is long (5 + mins) it is unusually compelling another POYI winner

This is a brilliant use of split screens telling two interlocked stories. Great work it recently won a Pictures of the Year Award as best multimedia feature for Amanda Lucier & Ross Taylor of the Virginian Pilot. It is part of a strong five part series on a NATO hospital in Kandahar

Lt. Cmdr. Dave Shellington is a pediatric intensive care doctor at the NATO hospital in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Separation is nothing new for Dave and his wife, Tammy, but this is their first time apart as parents. Sydney, his daughter, is often on his mind. His wife Tammy feels the weight of single motherhood. Their lives are worlds apart, yet intersect in unexpected ways.
